Coming Soon: Psychology Otherwise: The Decolonial Option

What becomes possible when psychology begins from Africa and other Majority World contexts?

Psychology Otherwise: The Decolonial Option, by the Readsurama Decolonial Collective, offers a critical contribution to ongoing conversations about the decolonisation and transformation of psychology.

The book challenges dominant theories and research traditions rooted largely in WEIRD contexts: Western, educated, industrialised, rich and democratic societies. Beginning from Africa, it invites a fundamental reconsideration of how psychological knowledge is produced, whose experiences are centred, and whose perspectives have historically been marginalised.

Through a decolonial Africa(n)-centring (DAC) approach, the authors position African and other Majority World contexts not as peripheral sites for applying theories developed elsewhere, but as vital sites for generating knowledge, theory and new understandings of human experience.

In doing so, Psychology Otherwise moves beyond simply calling for greater inclusion within established frameworks. It invites readers to imagine psychology differently, grounded in histories, realities and ways of knowing that have too often been excluded from the centre of the discipline.

The book is a timely contribution to conversations on decoloniality, epistemic justice and the future of psychology, with particular relevance for South Africa, the African continent and the wider Global South.
