About the Journal

The South African Journal of Psychology (SAJP) is a peer-reviewed journal published by SAGE on behalf of the Psychological Society of South Africa (PsySSA).

SAJP is committed to publishing rigorous, ethically grounded and contextually relevant psychological research, with particular attention to Africa, the Global South and diasporic perspectives. The journal promotes rigorous, fair and timely peer review.

As part of its continuing development, SAJP is seeking to appoint three new Associate Editors to strengthen and broaden the editorial team's sub-disciplinary, theoretical and methodological expertise.

About the Role

Appointments will initially be for three years, with a negotiable start date and the possibility of renewal by mutual agreement.

Associate Editors will work collaboratively with the Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor, in partnership with SAGE, to support rigorous, constructive and timely editorial decision-making.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assessing submissions for alignment with the journal's aims, scope, scholarly contribution and readiness for peer review.
  • Identifying and inviting appropriate peer reviewers.
  • Overseeing the peer-review process and supporting timely, constructive reviews.
  • Evaluating manuscripts and reviewer feedback and preparing developmental editorial recommendations.
  • Upholding ethical editorial standards in line with COPE guidance and journal policies.
  • Contributing to editorial policy, intellectual development and strategic direction.
  • Strengthening professional and scholarly networks across South Africa, Africa and internationally.
  • Encouraging submissions from established, early-career and emerging scholars within relevant fields and networks.
  • Participating in periodic online editorial-team meetings.

A collaborative editorial environment

Associate Editors will not be expected to work alone. The Editor-in-Chief and editorial team regularly confer on complex submissions and editorial decisions. Support and guidance will be available during induction and throughout the appointment.

Who Should Apply?

SAJP welcomes expressions of interest from scholars who can demonstrate:

  • Scholarly expertise relevant to one or more areas within the journal's scope.
  • Experience publishing and reviewing scholarly work. Previous editorial experience would be advantageous.
  • Strong organisational capacity to manage manuscripts and correspondence within agreed timeframes.
  • The ability to evaluate diverse theoretical and methodological approaches, including quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, psychometric and critical approaches.
  • A commitment to constructive, developmental and ethical editorial practice.
  • Sound scholarly judgement, collegiality and a willingness to collaborate with the editorial team.

Inclusivity and Membership

Applications are welcomed from scholars at different career stages. PsySSA membership is preferable but is not a requirement.

Selection and Appointment

Appointments will be made by the Editor-in-Chief. Selection will consider applicants' editorial experience and potential, intellectual and methodological expertise, and the overall balance of expertise within the editorial team.

Consideration will also be given to the journal's commitment to expanding the geographical and epistemic foundations of psychology in Africa and beyond.

How to Submit Your Expression of Interest

Interested scholars are invited to submit their expressions of interest through the official online submission form.

Your submission should include:

  1. A brief curriculum vitae (CV) or resume.
  2. A one-page Expression of Interest addressing:
    • Your scholarly and methodological areas of expertise.
    • Your relationship to SAJP's scope and to psychology in Africa or the broader Global South.
    • Relevant reviewing, editorial, mentoring or scholarly-service experience.
    • What you hope to contribute to the journal.
