PsySSA Commemorates World Suicide Prevention Day

World Suicide Prevention Day 2026

10 September 2026
Theme: Changing the Narrative on Suicide
Call to Action: Start the Conversation

PsySSA commemorates World Suicide Prevention Day, joining efforts to challenge stigma, encourage dialogue and strengthen suicide prevention.

The theme, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” calls on us to reconsider how we speak about and respond to suicide. Stigma, silence and misinformation can prevent people from seeking support. Changing the narrative means creating spaces where people can speak, be heard and seek help.

This year’s call to action, “Start the Conversation,” reminds us of the importance of connection. We do not need to have all the answers. We can start by asking, listening without judgement and helping people access support.

Suicide prevention is a shared responsibility. It requires access to mental health services, community support, evidence-based interventions and attention to the factors that affect wellbeing.

This World Suicide Prevention Day, PsySSA encourages us to:

  • Reach out and ask how someone is doing
  • Listen without judgement
  • Challenge stigma and misinformation
  • Encourage connection and help seeking
  • Support access to mental health care and suicide prevention

Change the narrative. Start the conversation.

Contributions from our Divisions:

September 10th marks World Suicide Prevention Day. This year’s global theme, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” urges us to move away from a culture of silence, stigma, and isolation, and live by its vital call to action: Start a Conversation.

Starting a conversation doesn’t require professional clinical expertise; it requires human empathy, presence, and courage. When we change the narrative, we shift from viewing suicide as an individual failure to recognizing it as a public health and community concern that requires collective care.

Three Simple Steps to Start a Conversation Today:
• Ask Directly: Research shows that asking someone directly “Are you thinking about suicide?” does not plant the idea; it provides immense relief and opens the door to honesty.
• Listen Without Judgment: Put away distractions, validate their pain, and avoid rushing in with toxic positivity or quick fixes.
• Connect to Care: You don’t have to carry the burden alone. Know your local emergency and crisis line numbers and offer to help bridge the gap to professional support.

Let’s dismantle the stigma together. One conversation at a time, we can change the narrative.

On World Suicide Prevention Day 2026, we join the global call to “Change the Narrative on Suicide.” Myths and stigma can be barriers to speaking up or seeking help. Suicide is complicated and preventable; any talk of suicide should be taken seriously. Asking someone directly and compassionately about suicide doesn’t make them think about it, it can actually open the door to connection and support.

We all have a role to play in suicide prevention. Do it. Show up. Listen without judgment. Help them bond. Follow-up. Small acts of care and connection can make a big difference. We can call out damaging myths, signpost help and create communities where people feel heard, valued and supported.
