On the 12th April 2019, Dr Jacobus Barnard of the Medical Protection Society’s (MPS) Educational Faculty presented a 3-hour international workshop called “Mastering Healthcare Communication” at the PsySSA head office in Parktown. The workshop is tailored to help allied healthcare professionals limit risk by managing patient expectations and improving healthcare quality. A series of similar interactive workshops have been successfully presented worldwide by the MPS Educational faculty to dentists, doctors and specialists. Because of the popularity of these workshops, a similar workshop was designed by MPS for the “Allied Health Professionals”.
The aim of these workshops is to provide ongoing learning to healthcare professionals, and to equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills to reduce their own risk of receiving a patient complaint or claim. The workshop included interactive discussions, videos, exercises and case studies and lasted approximately three hours. Delegates could earn 3 CDP ethical points for attending.
The invitation was sent to all PsySSA Gauteng members. It was a huge success and delegates had the opportunity to engage with colleagues and friends, and to enjoy the delicious snacks provided by PsySSA.
This is the feedback received at the PsySSA Office from one of the workshop participants.
“I would like to express my thanks to the PsySSA staff as well as to the MPS speaker Dr Jacobus Barnard for a great talk on communication skills. I am a member of both PsySSA and MPS, and was very grateful that PsySSA and MPS went to the trouble to address specific needs of psychologists this time. Also thank you for the wonderful soup and snacks on a cold rainy night”.
It is hopefully the first of many more to come!
