About the Workshop:
Photography is a powerful tool for environmental advocacy, capable of translating complex ecological and social issues into compelling human stories that inspire awareness, empathy, and action. Drawing on conservation psychology, this presentation explores how photographic storytelling can be used to strengthen public engagement with environmental challenges while foregrounding principles of social and ecological justice. Through examples from conservation and advocacy work in South Africa, participants will consider how images can shape perceptions, influence attitudes, and support campaigns for environmental protection and ethical policy change. The session will also reflect on the responsibilities of visual storytellers in representing communities, wildlife, and landscapes with integrity. Photography offers a unique bridge between knowledge, emotion, and meaningful environmental action.
About the Presenter:
Dr Stephanie Klarmann is a conservation psychology researcher based in South Africa. Her work has focused primarily on envisioning a conservation psychology that is relevant in the South African context with a stronger focus on social and ecological justice. Her other areas of interest include youth capacity building, conservationist well-being, photographic storytelling, environmental education, and rights of nature. She is also Campaign Manager for Blood Lions, engaging in advocacy, awareness raising and policy work on the captive predator industry.
