The Climate, Environment and Psychology (CEP) Division of PsySSA invites you to a webinar presented by Prof Nick Malherbe, exploring the relationship between psychology, capitalism and ecological justice.
About the Webinar
Capitalism is driven by continual growth, production and consumption, with far-reaching consequences for the environment. Psychology, however, has often focused on individual behaviour in responding to environmental concerns, with less attention given to the structural forces that contribute to ecological destruction.
Nature, Anticapitalism, Psychology invites a critical examination of this relationship. The webinar will consider how psychology might contribute to anticapitalist struggles for ecological justice and what it means to align psychological praxis with the psycho-political demands of these struggles. It will also explore when ecological justice may require us to think and act beyond the conventional boundaries of psychology.

Presenter
Prof Malherbe is researcher at the Institute for Social and Health Sciences, University of South Africa, and is affiliated with the South African Medical Research Council-University of South Africa Violence, Injury and Social Asymmetries Research Unit. He works with social movement actors, cultural workers, and young people. His research interests include violence, discourse, and community praxis.
