Biography of Dr Mashego INTRODUCING THE NEW PRESIDENT: DR TERESA-ANNE BAGAKILWE MASHEGO


The PsySSA President, Dr Teresa-Anne Bagakilwe Mashego, was born and grew up in Hammanskraal. After completing her schooling in the area, she obtained a BSc degree at the University of the North, majoring in Statistics and Psychology. She was the recipient of a UN scholarship and completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Education at the University of London. Dr Mashego thereafter taught Matric Mathematics and Biology, rising to the ranks of Deputy Principal and then Principal of a high school in the then Northern Province. During this period Dr Mashego also completed an Honours degree in Psychology through UNISA, where after she accepted a lecturing position at the University of Zululand. There she taught Research Methodology and Statistics. She also completed a MEd through the University of Massachusetts in the USA. Dr Mashego then changed her career path and moved into her present field of Psychology. She completed a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology and in 2000 a PhD on incest in families.

Dr Mashego is presently a Senior Lecturer and Coordinator of the Clinical Masters training programme at University of the North. In this capacity she also coordinates the University Clinic’s community outreach services. She also holds a visiting lecturer position at the University of Oslo in Norway where she lectures on her present area of interest, therapy of relevance for each culture. In additiion, Dr Mashego is a sessional Clinical Psychologist for the Polokwane hospitals and runs a part-time private practice. She additionally hosts a radio talk show on Thobela FM dealing with the provision of psychological services.

A founder member of PsySSA, Dr Mashego has been involved in the leadership of the Society for a number of years – as Chair of the Limpopo Branch, as well as of the Division for Clinical Psychology. Dr Mashego is also a member of Professional Board for Psychology and currently serves on the Board’s Quality Assurance Committee.

Dr Mashego comes from an academic family and this tradition is instilled in her present family. Her husband is a Professor of Zoology who has specialised in fish parasites. He has named a new species of fish parasite he discovered Dactylogyrus teresae in her honour. Dr Mashego admits to feelings of ambivalence regarding this celebrity status given that it is a parasitic species – a sources of amusement to both her and her husband! Dr Mashego’s has three children. Her eldest son is a final year medical student, whilst her daughter is completing a BSc Honours degree in Psychology. Her youngest son is in Grade 11 and plans to follow in his elder sibling’s footsteps and study medicine.

Dr Mashego describes herself as a person who “loves being with people”. Her hobbies include studying, traveling, lawn and table tennis, reading, and cooking for her family on Sundays.
