15TH SOUTH AFRICAN PSYCHOLOGY CONGRESS
SOUTH AFRICAN PSYCHOLOGY: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE
12-14 AUGUST 2009 & 11 AUGUST 2009, PRE CONGRESS WORKSHOPS
INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION CENTRE, CAPE TOWN
If you haven't already done so it is time to diarise the 15th South African Psychology Congress, taking place at the International Conference Centre in Cape Town from 11-14 August 2009. The congress theme is "South African Psychology: Past, Present, and Future" and invites participants to take time to reflect on South African psychology's past and to make proposals for where we would like to take the discipline in the future. The 15th Congress kicks off with pre-congress workshops on the 11th August. The workshops cover a wide range of subject areas including treating alcohol addictions with CBT, running a private practice, transitioning from being a psychologist to a coach, a neuropsychology or forensic psychology workshop, and an all-important ethics workshop. Workshops will cost somewhere in the region of R1200 for a full-day workshop and R600 for a half-day workshop. The Scientific programme will start off with the PsySSA AGM and keynote addresses on the 12th August. The invited/keynote speakers that have been secured so far for the Congress are Prof Cheryl de la Rey, Prof. Oliver Turnbull, Prof. Julian Barling, and Prof. Linas Bieliauskas. The fact that there are two invited speakers with a neuropsychology background, Prof. Turnbull and Prof. Bieliaukus, indicates the growing international interest in this sub-discipline. The Congress will also be honoured with hosting the first meeting of the executive committee of the International Union of Psychological Science (IUPsyS) on the African continent and a number of the international executive committee members will be participating in a special session during the Congress. In many ways, the 15th South African Psychology Congress will therefore also serve as a "dress rehearsal" in preparation for hosting the International Congress of Psychology in Cape Town in 2012. The IUPsyS President, Prof Rainer Silbereisen, has been invited to give the Congress' opening address.
Abstracts of approximately 250 words are invited in all areas of psychology. Abstracts are invited for paper presentations (of approximately 30 minutes each), posters, symposia (a collection of several papers around a central theme), and round table discussions. Preference in the round table discussions will be given to submissions that focus on the conference theme. Abstracts should be submitted via the PsySSA website (http://www.psyssa.com) on or before 31st March 2009. All abstracts will be peer-reviewed to ensure that high quality work is presented at the Congress. Presentations are also encouraged from students. PsySSA will be providing a prize for the best student presentation to incentivise student research. The Congress costs can also be found on the PsySSA website. Discounted rates are available for PsySSA members and for paying early. Substantial discounst are also available for students and intern psychologists. Please remember that participation in the Congress will earn you 20 CEU/CPD points and you also will earn extra CEU/CPD points for participation in any of the workshops
