Trauma and Violence Interest Group
The PsySSA Trauma and Violence Interest Group is an initiative of the PsySSA Executive. The eventual size and shape of a division will be decided by the members, but the current vision is simply to get the interest group formally established and working towards becoming a division. The present need is to establish a forum which can be used to formalize ideas around violence and trauma in South Africa as well as contextualize the role psychology professionals in responding to an ever growing need. This voice may eventually find itself in conversation with other professional groups and a salient part of the motivation is to eventually engage government directly.
The topic of Trauma and Violence is generating much interest from a variety of sectors (both public and private) yet it is interesting to note that not all working in the field necessarily agrees with the strategies currently being developed and implemented. The purpose of the interest group is to provide a collective voice for the profession and not oppress or discount preexisting contributions.
We need to to amplify what already exists. We need your voice but we also need the silent supporters that are willing to cast their vote and support through their association with the ideas and purpose behind the Trauma and Violence Interest group.
