Home > Divisions > The Division for Neuropsychology and Forensic Psychology
Council has agreed to the amalgamation of the Divisions of Neuropsychology and Forensic Psychology. The newly created body will be called the Division of Neuropsychology and Forensic Psychology. A constitution is currently being developed and this will be circulated to members for comment and input.
The Division has also been involved in drafting a response to the Professional Board for Psychology regarding the proposed specialist registration for neuropsychology and forensic psychology. A joint submission by PsySSA and the South African Clinical Psychological Neuropsychological Association (SACNA) has been made regarding the suggested scope of practice and core competencies for clinical neuropsychology, using existing international benchmarks as a basis. In addition, we have also been working on the core competencies for forensic psychology, although this has proved to be more challenging. The PsySSA President, Cheryl Foxcroft, will chair a session at Congress during which members can debate and give input on the scope of practice, core competencies, and training requirements for clinical neuropsychology and forensic psychology. Thereafter, PsySSA plans to provide the Board with further input regarding these specialist areas.
A forensic psychology workshop is to be run by the Division later this year, the focus of which will be on divorce, custody and access. This is area that results in a high incidence of disciplinary hearings each year. Details of this workshop with be circulated to members shortly.
In keeping with the 2006 conference theme, Psychology in the Public Domain, the Division will be hosting a round table discussion, Psychologists as Experts in Court. Prominent members of the judiciary, media and our profession will participate.
As always any ideas, comments and/or input you may regarding the Division is welcome.
